Prologue

“We’ve been at this for hours, do you really know what you’re doing?” The crackle of the comms from Krystelle came through as Haven sat in his Anathema, a virtual map before him. Small objects were moving about the map, stopping frequently and performing scans.

“We’ll find something soon enough. If it weren’t for all the Sansha hideouts I’d of already gotten us a hit.” The probes continued moving on the map, there was only one area of the Arera system that he had not fully scanned. This had to be it. The probes settled several AU off the ninth planet, their scan ranges formed a small cluster of overlapped spheres. “Starting the scan” silence followed on the comms line as the scan timer ticked down. Suddenly, a small green blip appeared on the map. “It seems I found something, what say we check it out?”

“About time” Krystelle’s reply came quickly, with no shortage of snap. “Any longer and I was gonna pod you!”  A small crackle of laughter mingled with the static of the comms. The two ships aligned on the signature and warped off in unison.

The Anathema and Harbinger came out of warp near the wormhole, slowly decelerating as the two capsuleers caught their first glimpse of the natural wonder. “It looks so strange… like a massive hole was ripped into the space.” Krystelle’s voice was soft as she gazed upon the wormhole.

“It pretty much is a hole ripped in space.” Haven’s voice was unchanged by the wormhole. He had researched them and prepared himself ahead of time for what to expect. From the reports he’d seen and read this was a wormhole leading to some dangerous space. There was no way to be sure, but the signs were there. “Prepare yourself, we don’t know what we’ll find in there.”

Krystelle snapped out of her wonder, “I’ve always been prepared, thank you! I just hope your toy ship doesn’t rip apart at the first sign of trouble, I don’t need your pod to worry about!” If she had been nervous, yelling at Haven always made her feel better. She couldn’t see his face then, but she knew he would be grinning.

A sense of anticipation and excitement was in the air now, both pilots were ready to venture into the unknown. “Approaching the wormhole, prepare to jump” both ships edged slowly towards the opening, Haven’s Anathema stopped the closest. “Jump in 3… 2… 1… Go!” both ships flashed and disappeared.

Just as they entered the wormhole it destabalized — closing behind them.
